The American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Michigan Association for Purebred Dogs (MAPD) have reported that the Detroit City Council unanimously rejected a proposed breed ban this week.
Local fanciers and responsible dog owners banded together to successfully convince the council members that breed-specific legislation would be unenforceable, penalize responsible dog owners and would not do anything to improve public safety. The proposal would have banned “new pit bulls,” defined as American Stafforshire Terriers, Stafforshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers and mixed breeds of similar traits. The proposed legislation further required existing owners to comply with restrictive care conditions.
