Dawg Business Makes Pet Care Your Business

July 19, 2010

Who knew a Rottweiler puppy could change someone’s life so much?

The author of the blog Dawg Business, Jana Rade, has likely asked herself this very question countless times. Her dog-loving husband, Jerry, brought one home one day, and the little female pup did just that. Before that point, Jana confesses, dogs were just okay, but not something she wanted in her own house. However, Jana immediately fell under the puppy’s charm and playfulness, naming her Jasmine. That was almost seven (human) years ago, and much has happened to Jasmine in the ensuing time, including many vet trips and surgeries.

Jasmine was not the only one who underwent many changes through these experiences, though: Rade was once a graphic artist, and has since devoted her life to her dogs. This includes the development of a dog wellness ranch designed for Jasmine, her own pet, and a crack team of vets on hand to care for her. Additionally, Rade spends copious amounts of time researching dogs and all related topics. The story of Jasmine’s adventures inspired her and Jerry to start this charming and informative blog largely devoted to helping pet owners know how to take the best care or their pets.

As You Celebrate Independence Day This July 4th, Remember Your Pets Are Still Depending on You

As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, we eagerly await the typical festivities associated with it: picnics, parades, and of course, fireworks. Pet Vitamins – Keeping Your Furry Friends Healthy

June 30, 2010

We know multivitamins benefit humans immensely, and are vital for proper nutrition. We also know that without sufficient vitamins, we become malnourished and susceptible to diseases such as rickets, scurvy, and beriberi. But what we may not know is that pets also need and benefit from vitamin supplements. While good-quality pet food typically contains a fair amount of these nutrients, some pets may need additional vitamins and minerals to aid in their system function. Without them, your pets’ lifespans can be cut short. Conversely, over-supplementation can be dangerous, too. Be sure to consult with your vet before buying and/or administering vitamin supplements to your pets, and be sure to read the label carefully.

Newfoundland Dog Breed – Gentle Giants

June 21, 2010

A man is not a good man to me because he will feed me if I should be starving, or warm me if I should be freezing, or pull me out of a ditch if I should ever fall into one. I can find you a Newfoundland dog that will do as much.
~Henry David Thoreau, from Walden

Newfoundland terriers are a breed well beloved and oft-commemorated through history. The poet Lord Byron left a famous inscription on the burial site of his own Newfie, named Boatswain, and is infamous for his extreme devotion to the dog. Several presidents and politicians have kept Newfies as pets, including Rutherford B. Hayes, James Buchanan, and Robert F. Kennedy. Noted explorers Lewis and Clark took their Newfie, Seaman, with them on their expedition. British painter and sculptor Edwin Landseer often used Newfies as his subjects in his paintings, like the one shown here below, and subsequently became the namesake of the Landseer breed of Newfies.

Dogs Really Do Eat Anything

June 13, 2010

by Ellie Smith, guest author

I recently read an article about Lola the underwear-eating dog, who outrageously consumed three pairs of pants and developed a keen taste for all things unsuitable for a dog’s palate. The next temptation was chocolate brownies as the smell of freshly made, chocolaty delights proved simply irresistible. Lola devoured the whole lot along with the shattered glass of the container. Luckily the recently consumed underwear protected Lola’s stomach from cutting her – things could have been a whole lot worse.

This story actually brought back memories, as my border collie Meg decided to help herself to a whole packet of Nurofen when she was only two years old.

Give A Dog A Bone, Or Think Again?

June 10, 2010

For years we have treated our dogs to a beef or lamb bone oblivious to the risks of doing so. Research from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) actually warns us that bones can be seriously damaging towards a dogs health and could lead to a vital trip to the vets. Animal bones in particular can break into shards which can cause mouth cuts and tongue injuries. Bones could get stuck in the oesophagus or lodged in the windpipe leading to fatal consequences.

Dogs naturally love to chew bones and we know that they are a good way of keeping canine teeth and gums healthy. So what are the safe options for your dog?

Chillin’ with the Chinchilla

May 16, 2010

One of the particularly attractive aspects of the chinchilla is its extremely diminutive size, typically reaching an average height of 12 inches and weighing in at an average 1.4 pounds. When deciding to adopt a chinchilla, you really have to consider many factors since chinchillas have many special needs to be content and happy. They’re also crepuscular creatures, so if you’re an early riser who likes to get to bed early, this is not the pet for you.
