Foster Pets

December 5, 2011

in Cats, Dogs

One of our Wordless Wednesday submissions was from Foster Mommy and it got us to thinking about the wonderful people that open their homes to pets that need our help.

Foster homes are extremely useful to assist animal shelters, local humane societies and breed rescues. There are so many pets in need that some of them could use a little extra help to find a permanent, loving home. Fostering a pet may seem like a huge task but it is a very good way to make a difference. A break from kennel life will give the pet a second chance at becoming someone’s forever cherished pet. Fostered pets become better adapted to home life and increases their chance of remaining in the new home permanently. The individual love and care of a foster parent gives the animal an opportunity to flourish. After some of these lovable pets have spent several weeks or months at the shelter without being adopted they are euthanized for lack of space. Getting involved and doing whatever we can to prevent this fate is worth the little time and effort it takes.

Moving in together can be a big adjustment. Instead of making decisions for one, you have to compromise on everything — the dishes, the dusting, the dinner parties. If your partner has a pet, it complicates things even more. Sure, seeing this cuddly creature on an occasional basis was a breeze, but how will you handle living with it every single day?

Pretend like you’re dealing with your in-laws. After all, it’s practically the same thing. You’re two parties brought together by one common interest — your partner. So if you want to make the best of your new situation (and live in pet harmony), follow these simple guidelines:

Getting a Puppy for Christmas

November 28, 2011

in Dogs

Christmas is fast approaching and we are all starting to consider the perfect gift for our loved ones. Parents with children often want to get them a puppy. They know the joy and pleasure a companion will be to grow up with and share those wonderful years.

Before taking the plunge, please do your homework and consider all the factors that accompany adding a new member to the family before taking that leap of commitment.

Cost of adding a puppy

First is the initial cost of the puppy. We strongly recommend going to your local animal shelter to find that new member. You will be able to find puppies and mature dogs. Good things can be said about either choice. Puppies are indeed fun but need to be trained from the ground up which require a whole lot of consistent work. Mature dogs may already be house trained and that can shave hours of training and frustration. Visit the shelter and plan to spend plenty of time with the choices you will have. A few hours playing will tell you a lot about each pet you think will be a great match for you and your family.

Anyone who owns – and loves – a pet rabbit knows that the animals need space to play and exercise in order to stay healthy. Exercise time can, to a certain extent, be provided by an outside run or letting the rabbit roam the house (supervised). It’s important to have a hutch that provides enough room for your rabbit to move around freely though, otherwise it may suffer both mentally and physically.

Despite this, many rabbit owners still used old fashioned hutches that were designed to be used when breeding rabbits for food. These hutches were designed to be small and relatively in order to “fatten up” the animal. It goes without saying that these don’t provide the space and comfort that a pet rabbit needs!

PetsBlogs is a steadfast supporter of adopting a pet from your local shelter. Whenever we get wind of a project that encourages adoption, we like to help spread the word.

The Shelter Pet Project is a public service campaign from The Humane Society, Maddie’s Fund and the Ad Council. The Shelter Pet Project, launched in 2009, is a public service ad campaign focused on spreading the word that pets in shelters are wonderful and lovable, and encouraging potential adopters to consider the shelter as the first place to look when acquiring a “new best friend.”
