Years and years ago, I convinced my mom to take in a little tan Cocker Spaniel puppy that needed a good home. I did so by bringing the 4-month-old cutie right to her house. They fell in love and the rest was history. Last night, the story ended with a trip to the vet and some much needed rest for the weary companion who, though blind, deaf, and riddled with tumors, didn’t seem able to leave mom behind.
With Sympathy
They will not go quietly,
the pets who’ve shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.Old habits still can make us think
we hear them at the door
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor. Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly. And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them… and always will.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone–wherever it goes–for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.from Rudyard Kipling’s The Power of the Dog
Thank you so for loving me. You know I love you too,
And that’s why it’s hard to say goodbye and end this life with you.
So hold me now just one more time and let me hear you say,
Because you care so much for me, you’ll let me go today.from Susan Jackson’s May I Go?

My heartfelt sympathies to you. This touches a special place in my heart. We, too, had a Cocker named Sophie. She passed away several years ago, but is never far from our thoughts and always in our hearts. We were so blessed to have such amazing Sophies!
