OTTAWA (CP) – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Aron Pet Food are warning consumers not to purchase or use certain pet treats because the products may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for salmonellosis in humans.
The following products are affected by this alert:
-Salmon Snackers 100% Salmon Treats for Dogs, 50-gram package, UPC 8 33234 00100 6, T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, Wash.
-Salmon Snackers 100% Salmon Treats for Cats, 50-gram package, UPC 8 33234 00101 3, T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, Wash.
-Shrimp Snackers 100% Shrimp Treats for Cats, 28-gram package, UPC 8 33234 00104 4, T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, Wash.
-Shrimp Snackers 100% Shrimp Treats for Dogs, 28-gram package, UPC 8 33234 00103 7, T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, Wash.
-Healthy K9 Beef Jerkey 100% Natural Dog Treats, 70-gram package, UPC 7 76626 53898 1, Aron Pet Food, Abbotsford, B.C.
-Healthy K9 Beef Heart 100% Natural Dog Treats, 70-gram package, UPC 7 76626 53897 4, Aron Pet Food, Abbotsford, B.C.
Aron Pet Food, Abbotsford, B.C., is voluntarily recalling the affected products. These products have been distributed in British Columbia and Alberta.
People may risk bacterial infection by handling the treats directly or by contact with pets that have eaten the treats. Anyone who may have handled the treats should wash their hands with warm water and soap. Consumers should dispose of these treats in the trash.
Common symptoms of salmonella infection are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, although more serious consequences are possible, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. There have been three reported illnesses associated with these products.
