The Numbers Behind the Need for Dog Adoptions

2

According to ASPCA statistics, approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs.

Of all those dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized, and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owners.

So if you’re looking for a dog to add to your family, why not consider adopting a dog?! Head over to your local shelter or check out PetFinder. Did you know you can search for specific breeds on PetFinder? It’s true.

Here are the top 10 searched dog breeds on PetFinder (as of February 2016):

  1. Poodle
  2. German Shepherd
  3. Golden Retriever
  4. Labrador Retriever
  5. Dachshund
  6. Shih Tzu
  7. Yorkie
  8. Australian Shepherd
  9. Chihuahua
  10. Boxer

Devoted pet owner and now, devoted pet editor, Judi worked in traditional offices, keeping the books and the day-to-day operations organized. Taking her dog to work every day for over a decade never seemed odd. Neither did having an office cat. She knows what it's like to train a new puppy and she's experienced the heartache of losing beloved companions. Retired, she currently lives with her spoiled dog and four chickens (who are, interestingly enough, also spoiled).
