Angel’s Gate Founder Charged

Back in May 2011 we wrote about allegations against Angel’s Gate. We followed the story as best we could but not much could be found. A few days ago we saw an article about a dog that was fitted for a cart to ‘replace’ his dysfunctional hind legs. Decided it was time to look again to see if the ball was rolling to end the travesty at Angel’s Gate. Much to our delight the Delaware County, New York, District Attorney did what should have been done months ago.

Susan Marino who founded Angel’s Gate in 1993 has now been charged with 17 additional charges of cruelty to animals as well as a drug-related charge. The evidence gathered as a result of PETA’s undercover investigation was more than enough for the Delaware County, New York, District Attorney’s Office to file charges.

Grooming Blunder Leads to Lawsuit for Petco

We have all taken our pets to the groomer to get them all spruced up at one time or another. How would you feel if you went to pick them up and they had an injury they didn’t go in with?

That is exactly what happened after Gladys Kupuwai dropped off her granddaughter’s Pomeranian-Maltese mix, Dodo, for routine grooming at Petco in Kaneohe, Hawaii. A couple of days later, she realized one of her ears had been cut. “(She) was dried, bloody, was dry blood, everything,” Kapuwai said. “I noticed that at home, so when I took her to the vet, the doctor had told me it looked like they tried to glue it back.” The doctor told Kupuwai he could have saved the ear if the groomers had told her right then, but they didn’t.

Recent Allegations Against Angel’s Gate

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is seeking an investigation into the activities or lack thereof at Angel’s Gate located in Delaware County, Delhi NY. An investigator for PETA who posed as a volunteered at the shelter found that the rehabilitation center failed to properly treat animals in deteriorating health, intentionally denied the creatures water and shelter and left carcasses of dead pets out among living for days.

In the 26-page complaint given to the district attorney’s office, PETA said its undercover agent, who was at Angel’s Gate for 21 days at the end of November and beginning of December, witnessed the following:

Top 10 Mistakes Made by Cat Owners

by Rolan Tripp, DVM, CABC

Nobody’s perfect and all of us could do better. I have put together below my opinion on the most common mistakes made by cat owners. Take just a few minutes now to avoid a lot of time and grief later.

Mistake 1: Impulse adoption instead of careful selection
Because of their big hearts, many people take in strays, or other cats that no one wants. Sometimes these turn out to be the best cat imaginable. In other cases, there is a reason other humans choose to not share a space with this cat.
Every person is allowed to carefully CHOOSE a cat at some point in their life. I am now consulting on the new pet selection service,, so use this or another resource to help you find your feline soul mate.

Dogs Win Big on Election Day with Historic Victory in Missouri

Fed up with their state’s reputation as the Puppy Mill Capital of America, Missourians hit the polls on Election Day to declare that enough is enough! On Tuesday, November 2, voters in the Show Me State passed the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, which appeared on their ballots as Proposition B. (Although policy reform is most often generated through state legislatures, Prop B was a citizen-supported initiative). It is an incredible victory, and one we hope will send a strong message to the governments of other states—namely, that the public wants better conditions for puppy mill dogs, and will take on the task of changing the law themselves if elected officials fail to act.

People Who Don’t Like Dogs

“A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than you love yourself” -Josh Billings

I truly believe there is a physiological difference between people who don’t like dogs and those that do. There is also a big difference between “not wanting” and “hating” dogs.

People that do not want dogs are an okay group. It may be that their lives do not allow time for them to properly care for a beloved companion. Others may have allergies, or a true fear of animals. Whatever the reason they choose to not own a dog is acceptable in my world.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month

“Humane education gives Animal Humane Society the ability to prevent animal cruelty before it starts,” states Tammy Noack, Humane Education Manager for AHS. “Our focus is to help students develop compassion, empathy, and respect for animals. We can change attitudes regarding what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to how animals should be treated.”
